Can you keep a Secret? Sometimes it's not so easy, as one rescuer discovered. No, Secret wasn't a terror—she didn’t scratch the couch or rip the curtains. In fact, she often stayed out of sight, which was just the plan (but we're getting ahead of ourselves…)
After Secret was trapped, she was vaccinated and spayed. She was also ear-tipped (top part of ear removed under anesthesia), which is a universally recognized practice that allows animal services folks to see at a glance that a cat has been sterilized. Then the rescuer decided that instead of releasing this pretty girl back outside, she would keep her…even though that would bring the total to more cats than her lease allowed.
Yes, as we who live in apartments know, many landlords do not accept pets and those who do often have restrictions. This has increasingly led to animal abandonment—at municipal shelters and sometimes, unthinkably, on the streets—as people are forced to choose between a place to live and splitting up their family.
So along with firm instructions to hide, Secret got a new name and a new life, taking up residence with the rescuer and her “legitimate” cats. But as she gained confidence, the hiding became less appealing…and one eviction notice later, she ended up at Heaven on Earth.
At our sanctuary, Secret didn't hide but wouldn't let you touch her, either. Yet it was clear she had friendly intentions as witness the busy biscuit making when she would see a volunteer pet another cat. We also discovered a secret about Secret—when especially happy, she wiggles her tail, all the way to its tips! Yes, tips. Secret, you see, has a tail that ends like a two-pronged fork, which she can move independently! And does more enthusiastically with each passing year.
