Heaven on Earth Society for Animals began in 2000 with a mission that resonates with animal lovers everywhere- to help end the senseless suffering and destruction of homeless animals caused by the overpopulation crisis. We developed spay/neuter programs that spayed or neutered 3,800 animals in three years. We built an adoption program for rescued strays, placing more than 400 animals in loving, permanent homes.

Mercedesweb2.jpgAnd then came Smokey, Joey, Sarah, Abercrombie and Ringo. They were feral... which meant no one else would take them in. They were afraid of people... which menat their chances of adoption were slim. But they were five precious lives- who deserved a chance to be safe and healthy, just like the rest of us.

That's how our sanctuary was born. That's how Heaven on Earth became a haven for special needs animals with no place else to go. Feral, disabled, elderly- this was the special niche we needed to fill.

Our first sanctuary was a converted garage in Newbury Park. In 2004 we moved to a larger, brighter, more home-like location in Van Nuys. Nearly 60 cats are with us now, some long-term residents and others who will eventually be adopted into homes of their own.

But more calls are coming in. More needy animals need us. And because of them, we need your help.

Heaven on Earth is one of the few rescue groups that welcomes FIV+ kitties. FIV is a cat-only disease, spread only by bite wounds or blood transfusions, never by casual contact like litter boxes, food bowls, or playing.

TomThumbsweb2.jpgEvery one of the animals we've rescued has a special story. Every one of them is a shining example of the value of each precious life. And because people like you cared, every one of them now has the chance for a happy, healthy life.

In the Los Angeles area alone, there are as many as one million stray cats, most of whom have not been neutered or spayed, so their population is increasing. While it is true that there are other shelters, few if any have a guaranteed no-kill policy. Moreover, most shelters try to place for adoption young and healthy cats, so those not considered adoptable may be admitted but will soon be euthanized.

How is Heaven on Earth different? We believe that every life is precious and that every animal should have a safe and loving home. We also believe that each animal has the right to a high quality of life. It does not matter to us if they are sick or old or disabled, as we only euthanize if an animal is suffering and not expected to live. Although we try to find an individual home for each animal, if that is not possible they have a safe haven for life in our cage-free sanctuary.
