Cage-Free Sanctuary

Heaven on Earth's sanctuary typically has 70-80 cats and kittens in residence, each with a hand-picked name.   They receive quality food, medical care and lots of love in a clean, cheerful environment.  Cages are used only for cats in isolation (e.g. new intakes) or recovering from a medical procedure.

cat 26 - oscar 2.jpgCats come to us from three main sources.  Some are saved from the euthanasia list at city shelters through our participation in Los Angeles Animal Services' New Hope Program.  Others are brought to us by people who've found strays and can't care for them; still others come from rescue groups who have taken in a cat or kitten with special needs but can't meet those needs without a facility like ours.

Adoption Program

All of our cats and kittens are available for adoption.  We are at the Van Nuys Petco on most Saturday afternoons with several adorable adoptables, and we're available by appointment at the sanctuary at other times.  We also participate in various large-scale adoption events held during the year throughout the greater Los Angeles area.

Prospective adopters are thoroughly screened and all known information about the cat is shared to ensure an ideal match for all concerned, two-legged and four-legged alike.  Every cat or kitten we adopt has been spayed or neutered, vaccinated and tested for FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) and FeLV (feline leukemia virus).

No-Kill Mission Statement

The mission of Heaven on Earth Society for Animals is to improve the quality of life for homeless animals, particularly those who are often overlooked because of special needs and low potential for adoption. We fulfill our mission by:

  • Placing homeless animals into permanent homes through our own adoption program and through collaborating with other humane organizations;
  • Providing lifelong care for animals with low potential for adoption at our cageless sanctuary; and
  • Decreasing the number of homeless animals through our own spay/neuter program and by providing information to the public on the importance of having their pets sterilized and referrals to assist them in doing so.

Heaven on Earth Society for Animals believes that every life is precious. Therefore, we are committed to doing all that we can to help bring an end to the killing of healthy cats and dogs, including feral cats, as well as those who are sick or injured but could regain their health with appropriate medical intervention.

Further, we embrace The Declaration of the No Kill Movement in the United States, and we envision the day when there are no more homeless pets and when every newborn companion animal can be guaranteed a safe and loving life.

Our Beginnings

Founded in early 2000 by long-term rescuer Eri Kriteman, Heaven on Earth began with a goal that still resonates today- to address the overpopulation crisis by helping end the senseless suffering and destruction of homeless animals.   We set about developing an adoption program and focused other volunteer efforts on spay/neuter services.

It was about five kittens, the only survivors at a plumbing supply lot where falling pipes had claimed their siblings' lives.  They were feral, so no one else would take them in.  They were afraid of people, so their chances of adoption were slim.  But they were five little lives who deserved a chance to be safe, healthy and loved.

Joey, Sarah, Smokey, Abercrombie and Ringo were our sanctuary's first five residents.  All the others who've followed owe their lives to these furry trailblazers.
